I am a Specialist Registrar in General Surgery on the South East Thames rotation and live in South London. Having completed the early years of the HST scheme at various hospitals throughout Kent and Sussex, I am now concentrating on my sub-speciality interest of HPB and Laparoscopic Surgery.
I trained initially in and around Dundee, and during that time developed an interest in Skills Assessment and Selection. Since moving back South I have represented the interests of Higher Surgical Trainees on the local training committee for the past 3 years, and have also been the South East Thames ASiT representative. I maintain a keen interest in education and regularly teach on laparoscopic skills courses.
At a difficult time in both surgical training and subsequent workforce planning, I am keen that we present a united front to protect a fair and efficient selection process, and high quality training with appropriate prospects for senior employment. The working pattern within the National Health Service will inevitably change over the coming years, but I believe that we all have a responsibility to recognise and promote the needs of current and future trainees, and leave a strong training system for those considering a career in Surgery.
