Honorary Secretary: Jonny Wild
A proud Lancastrian, I now find myself living in the enemy territory of South Yorkshire. I am general surgical trainee, with interests in coloproctology and emergency surgery. I graduated from Sheffield Medical School in 2004 and have since settled in the Sheffield, now married with a young son. I undertook my basic surgical training in South Yorkshire, obtaining my NTN in 2007. Having completed ST4 in October 2010, I have entered a period of out of programme research investigating the role of neuropilins in colonic pathophysiology at the University of Sheffield and am also undertaking an LLM in Medical Law and Ethics.
ASiT provides a unique, independent and unified voice for trainee surgeons of all grades across all nine surgical sub-specialities and plays a key role in defending the quality of surgical training from the threats that continue to surface. I initially became an ASiT member in the lead up to the MTAS debacle. At that time being part of this well-informed network of surgical trainees proved invaluable. We are now faced with major workforce planning issues caused by the swell in training numbers and a proposed sub-consultant grade on a backdrop of ever rising costs of surgical training and loss of training opportunities to the independent sector. It is crucial that trainees are represented by the collective voice that ASiT provides.
Central to the Association is its membership and through the role of Honorary Secretary I am especially keen on expanding the many benefits ASiT membership offers. I will continue to strengthen the relationships ASiT has with industry partners which are vital for a successful annual conference and to help secure the future of the Association.
