Past-President: Charlie Giddings

I qualified form University College London Medical School and undertook a basic surgical rotation involving multiple specialities. I am the product of the old scheme and did 5 years+ of SHO posts prior to getting that all-important first LAT. I’m a member of the RCSEng and obtained an NTN in 2005. I am now a year 5 SpR in ENT, working at The Royal Marsden Hospital.

This is my third year on the ASiT council; I joined ASiT in 2000 and have benefited directly from the hard work done by the Association over the last 10 years to deliver the views of trainees and disseminate information via the email forum.

I am completely committed to the goals of the association and aim to provide an experienced opinion and take the views of ASiT Council and the membership forward. I have always been interested in training and especially in promoting quality in a climate of reform. Never has it been more important than now to be represented by a unified voice for all training grades. ASiT plays a crucial role in defending the quality of surgical training in such an uncertain time for the trainees. There are many issues that continue to need attention as the EWTD, increases in trainee numbers, post-CCT employment concerns and rising costs for surgical training dilute training opportunities and influence our future careers.

My focus for the future includes campaigning against the effects of EWTD, to optimise training quality and protect patients from a sub-consultant grade by ensuring quality of the consultant product remains unchanged. I feel very privileged to have the opportunity to contribute to the Association.
