Secretary: Conor Marron
I was born and brought up in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and have largely remained in this area, apart from one year spent abroad. I completed my undergraduate studies at Queens University Belfast, without ever setting the world on fire!
I completed my pre-reg house officer year at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, before disappearing off to Australia to work at Bundaberg Base Hospital in Queensland.
My Basic Surgical Training was completed in Northern Ireland, during which time I passed my Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. I was successful in gaining a NTN in March 2005 and am currently a 1st year SpR. I am currently working as a Research Fellow aiming for a MD in the effects of Complement in the Inflammatory Response to Ruptured Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm.
During this time I became involved with ASiT at a regional level and was elected to the SHO rep position on our Northern Ireland ASiT committee. During this time we actively sought to spread the word of ASiT and managed to increase our regional meeting attendances from 20 to over 60 people per meeting. We have also established a comprehensive e-mail list in order that we can communicate with our trainees.
I have been elected to the Secretary position on our regional ASiT committee and have been acting as our Northern Ireland Rep to ASiT council.
I am proud to be associated with ASiT at this time when surgical training is undergoing a critical revolution, and at a time when the involvement of ASiT in shaping all of our futures is ever increasing. I believe that the role of ASiT can only increase and I look forward to representing the views of all trainees to the best of my ability.
I am particularly interested in developing ASiT involvement at a regional level and look forward to encouraging the regional ASiT reps, as it is only by this feedback mechanism that ASiT can know what the trainees feel, as well as disseminating important information to the trainees. I also have particular interests in the European Working Time Directive, and Academic Surgery.
I follow the college activities closely and have represented RCSEd in the annual rugby match with RCSEng and RCSI. The social side of involvement is as important as the political side and friendships developed through ASiT will be long lasting.
I look forward to serving you, and feel free to contact me if there is anything I can help with.
Conor
