European Working Time Directive

ASiT has long been lobbying on issues surrounding the European Working Time Directive to highlight the impact that this is having on craft specialties as a whole.

The Detrimental effects on health, lifestyle, and training are laid out in the ASiT Document on the Working Time Directive in May 2006.  ASiT has been instrumental in elevating the needs and concerns of Surgeons with relation to this policy to the BMA and the NHS National Workforce Projects.

ASiT has liaised closely with working parties in the Royal College of Surgeons of England, and has contributed to many advice documents issued by the RCSEng.

In addition, the 2008 trainee survey carried out by ASiT was used as evidence to support lobbying for an increase in working hours to 65 hours per week, in conjunction with the Royal College of Surgeons of England.  Full evidence presented to the College and Government departments can be viewed in the ASiT EWTD Position Statement "Optimising Working Hours to Protect Training and Patient Care".
