Abstract submission
***PLEASE NOTE: Abstract submission has now closed***
Authors of selected abstracts have been informed by e-mail to the e-mail address which they provided during the submission process. Please see the regulations below.
Please note: All persons selected to present an abstract MUST register for the conference, and MUST be and ASiT member prior to the conference commencement. Failure to join ASiT or register for the conference will result in the abstract being rejected and not allowed to be presented. Membership status will be verified prior to the conference commencement.
ASiT membership can be attained through the ASiT.
Regulations
There has never been a better time to submit an abstract to the ASiT Conference. Here are 4 reasons why it will be great for your career:
- Authors of the 10 best abstracts submitted will be invited to give an oral presentation, to some of the most influential members of the UK surgical community, at the ASiT Conference. There will also be a significant Poster Session as part of the conference.
- The 4 best presentations, from either the oral or poster sessions, will be invited to present at the Association of Surgeons of Great Britatin and Ireland Annual Scientific Meeting with abstracts published in the British Journal of Surgery
- All other oral presentation, and poster prize winning, abstracts will be published in the Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
- The ASiT medal and poster prize are highly prestigious and include a significant cash prize.
General information
This is a two-day meeting to be held on Saturday 18th March and Sunday 19th March. The Exhibition will run on both days, and posters will be displayed on both days.
The Scientific Session will attract a great deal of interest and, this year, offers a unique opportunity to present your work to a distinguished panel of guests, including the Presidents of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, Edinburgh, and Glasgow, along with many other prominent figures in Surgical Training.
In addition, the 4 best presentations, from either the oral or poster sessions, will be offered the opportunity to re-present their work during the prestigious ASiT session at the ASGBI conference to be held in Edinburgh on 3 - 5 May 2006. These abstracts will be published in the British Journal of Surgery. The other abstracts from the oral presentation session, and the poster prize winners will be published in the Annals of The Royal College of Surgeons of England.
Electronic submission of free papers
The meeting will, once again, feature a paperless electronic abstract submission system. This system enables the surgical community to “copy & paste” abstracts (including tables and special scientific characters, but no figures or diagrams) directly from word processing software, facilitating quick and painless abstract submission.
Submission will close at midnight on Sunday 15th January 2006.
Guidelines for the submission of abstracts
- Abstracts must consist of four paragraphs, entitled:
- Objective
- Methods
- Results
- Conclusions
- Abstracts are to be submitted as text and tables only (no figures, or diagrams).
- The text should be no longer than 250 words and fit comfortably on a single page of A4 using 12-point font.
- As the abstract will be judged anonymously, the text must not reveal the institutional affiliation.
- The Authors of all abstracts selected for presentation will be expected to register for the ASiT conference.
- The material must not have been previously published or presented at any national meeting. ASiT takes a serious view of Research Governance. Please ensure that the abstract has been seen and agreed by all of the named authors before submission. All authors have a responsibility to ensure that the data submitted is accurate, is not extrapolated and fairly represents the presentation to be given at the Association’s Annual Meeting.
Prizes and awards
The judging of the Prize sessions, and posters will be carried out by senior members of ASiT, in conjunction with a distinguished panel of referees with scientific, clinical, and educational backgrounds.
ASiT Medal
This is the Association’s most prestigious scientific award. The award consists of a Medal and a significant monetary award, and is presented to the author of the best research work delivered at the Annual Meeting Scientific Paper session.
The person reading the paper must be the principal research worker and be a trainee. In the case of multiple-author papers, the Medal will be presented to the person reading the paper and the award may be divided between the authors.
There will be runner-up awards for the 2nd and 3rd placed papers in this category. All abstracts from this session will either be offered for publication to The Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, or be offered the opportunity to re-present their data in the ASiT session at the ASGBI conference, with subsequent publication in the British Journal of Surgery.
Poster Prize
ASiT values the quality of its poster session and this is recognised through the selection of up to 5 posters to subsequently be presented orally on Sunday 19th March to compete for the ASiT Poster Prize. There will also be runner-up prizes for 2nd and 3rd place in this category. The best posters will have their abstracts published in the Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, or if of sufficient quality, be offered the opportunity to re-present in the ASiT session at the ASGBI conference with subsequent publication in the British Journal of Surgery.
Scientific papers
The paper should follow guidelines for scientific publications, and papers on issues related to Surgical Training are particularly relevant. Basic Science papers, Scientific papers, Clinical Research papers and well conducted audit studies, with good clinical/training relevance, will be considered. Case Reports will not normally be considered, unless of exceptional quality or interest.
The top 10 papers will be selected for oral presentation on either Saturday 18th March or Sunday 19th March. The presentations will last for 8 minutes, plus 2 minutes for questions.
The paper must not have been submitted previously to any other national or international association nor published in any Journal at the time of submission. Shortlisted papers which are found to have been presented elsewhere, or have been accepted for presentation elsewhere, will be disqualified.
Papers submitted for the ASiT Medal Prize section, and not shortlisted, will be considered for the Poster Presentation section of the meeting.
Posters
There will be a display of scientific posters in the RCSEd throughout the Meeting, representing all the specialities within General Surgery, and there will be a number of Poster Prizes. Poster adjudication will take place 1300 - 1330 and 15.00 - 15.30 on Saturday 18th March, when presenters will be expected to stand by their poster for the ‘poster run’. The adjudication will be carried out by members of the Scientific Committee.
The results of the Poster Competitions will be announced at the AGM on Saturday evening, with the top 5 posters selected for oral presentation on Sunday 19th March for the Poster Prizes.
Entrants should have prepared a brief oral presentation consisting of a maximum of 3 slides on Powerpoint, and lasting no more than 3 minutes, with 2 minutes for questioning. The top 3 posters will have their abstracts published in the Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
Audio visual arrangements
All presentations throughout this Scientific Meeting will be delivered using PowerPoint format.
Successful applicants will be informed by e-mail of acceptance of their abstract and the category in which it has been placed.
