Advanced Trauma Surgical Care course
TRAMUA COURSE NOW FULL
The conference this year will feature our first advanced trauma surgical care course on Friday 30th March 2007.
This is an opportunity for trainees to receive instruction in the principles and practices of surgical trauma care, in order to bridge the gap between ATLS and more definitive courses for more senior trainees.
This innovative and specially designed course aims to provide the essential skills required for Senior House Officers and Specialist Registrars, in the early years of their training, identifying a deficiency in what is currently available.
The course will take place in the Department of Anatomy in the Medical Bilogy Centre of Queens University Belfast. There will be a combination of lectures, group work, and practical dissection and tuition on approaches in trauma care. It has received good support from leading world figures in Trauma care.

Background:
ATLS is undertaken by many trainees early in their training as a requisite course for progression in a career in surgery. Further training in trauma skills is often neglected within the timeframe currently allowed due to MMC and EWTD. Other courses aimed at improving skills in Trauma Surgical Skills (DSTS) (TM) are often not permitted to be undertaken until late in the training period or until established as a consultant. Recent High profile articles in the BMJ, and from the ASGBI have highlighted the need for more established trauma and emergency surgery training. Development of a diploma in Trauma Surgery is currently proposed.
Objective:
To introduce the Topic of Trauma Surgical Care and Trauma ICU, advancing the level of knowledge and skill of trainees above that of ATLS and CCrISP, and bridging the gap to DSTC.
Methods:
Didactic Lectures and discussions, Small Group Case Discussions and Scenarios, Practical Cadaveric Dissection. Course to be backed by ASiT and included as a pre-conference course for the ASiT AGM to be held in Belfast. This will allow the establishment of the course through corporate funding under the banner of ASiT and access to a potential delegate pool of over 1600 ASiT members, along with other trainees.
Topics:
Chest Trauma, Abdominal Trauma, Access to the major vessels and control, Trauma ICU, Radiology and Head and Neck
