ASiT Conference 2006 Report

Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh | Edinburgh
Friday 17 March - Sunday 19 March

The ASiT Annual Conference was held in Edinburgh form the 17th to 19th March 2006, and attracted a total of 121 registered participants.

This conference celebrated the 30th anniversary of ASiT, in combination with the 500th anniversary of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and it was a pleasure to avail of the facilities at the College in Eidnburgh. The programme was full and varied and included excellent presentations from some of those 1976 pioneers, including Anthony Giddings and John Black, relating to the history and evolution of ASiT, along with very topical medico-political discussions featuring the President of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, and the President of the Royal College of Surgeons and Physicians of Glasgow.

The Silver Scalpel Award continues to grow in strength, and this year saw Ms Fiona MacNeill being the excellent trainer to be awarded the ASiT Silver Scalpel Award for 2006.  It is acknowledged by all that the key to the success of the forthcoming training schemes lies with the quality of training delivered, and indeed the quality of the trainer.

The training theme was aptly continued with presentations from Linda deCossart, Jonathon Beard, and a highly entertaining and useful presentation from David O’Regan.  Nigel Standfield was able to provide some much needed advice, and wisdom, for the current cohort of SHO’s involved in the transition to MMC.  The conference also saw the most competitive and largest scientific session in recent history.

The social aspect of ASiT was also explored and enjoyed with a black tie gala dinner at the Balmoral hotel, although the ceilidh did induce a few joint effusions in some of those founder members present!

This conference has provided a springboard and benchmark for all future ASiT Conferences!
