Trying to get your first paper published? Or looking to improve your career in scientific surgery? This one-day course is aimed at anybody wishing to improve the quality of their scientific writing and publications. Riaz Agha, Editor of the IJS, and Chris James from Elsevier Publishing will guide you through the paper-writing pathway from selecting ‘hot topics’ to structuring your article. Mr Neil Tolley, Consultant ENT and Head & Neck surgeon from St Mary's & Ealing NHS Trust, will also lead discussions.
The course will cover:
- An overview of the publishing process – the industry, timelines, bibliometric parameters, impact factors
- Before you start writing – searching for the right journal and audience, using the ”Guide for Authors“, checking if the contribution is new and original, getting an overview of the research area
- The language of scientific articles - scientific writing, do-and-don’ts, illustrations, etc.
- Structuring your article
- Article decisions and how to respond
- Publication ethics

The course will conclude with a free evening drinks reception and canapés in Ferens Art Gallery, with a welcome from the Lord Mayor and a string quartet.
The International Journal of Surgery is published online 6 times per year (increasing to 8 in 2010) and is indexed in PubMed/ MEDLINE and SCOPUS. It publishes original research articles, review papers, editorials and letters, relating to all areas of surgery. The journal has an eminent international editorial board, under the leadership of Professor R David Rosin, former vice-president of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
