Ethicon Bariatric & Laparoscopic Colorectal Courses 2012

 

SORTED Bariatric Course (Surgery for Obesity – Registrar Training and Educational Development)

The STEPS SORTED Course, established by Ethicon Endo-Surgery to be held in partnership with Musgrove Park Hospital Bariatric Department, offers advanced training in laparoscopic Bariatric surgery over 6 days, split between Taunton and the European Surgical Institute, Hamburg. Places are free of charge, supported by an unconditional grant from Ethicon Endo-Surgery.

Module One – 27th & 28th March 2012

The first module will be held at the ESI in Hamburg. This will involve using Simbionix computer simulators where you will carry out basic skills, suturing skills and a laparoscopic bypass. You will then take part in a dry lab where you will perform various Bariatric procedures. Day two will be in wet labs. You will complete a Band, Sleeve Gastrectomy and RNY Gastric Bypass.

Module Two – 30th April & 1st May 2012

Module two will be held at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton. Delegates will observe Gastric Banding procedures, gain an understanding of the psychological aspects of having a band from a band patient’s perspective, x-ray analysis of possible band complications and dilemmas. Delegates will then be exposed to a number of RNY Gastric Bypasses and topics covered will include patient set up and considerations.This will be followed by presentations covering the commissioning of a bariatric service and overview of the national bariatric surgery database.

Module Three – 14th & 15th May 2012

Module three will involve hands on surgery of all techniques learnt to date on fresh frozen human cadavers. This part of the module will take place at the Clinical Anatomy Suite, Bristol University.

Finally, all Modules are compulsory and throughout the Modules, delegates will be required to deliver a presentation to faculty and peers around current Bariatric topics of interest or contention. Presentation slides need to be submitted to faculty prior to presentation.

The STEPS Laparoscopic SORTED Course, established by Ethicon Endo-Surgery in partnership with NUGITS in Northumbria, offers advanced training in laparoscopic Bariatric surgery over five days, split between Hexham, North Tyneside, ESI in Hamburg and the NSTC, Freeman Hospital.

Module One – 8th and 9th May 2012

The first two day module will be held at Hexham on day 1 where delegates will observe Gastric Banding procedures, gain an understanding of the psychological aspects of having a band from a band patient perspective, understand x-ray analysis of possible band complications followed by a band fill course in the afternoon covering numerous clinical models and dilemmas. Day 2 will be held at North Tyneside General Hospital. Delegates will be exposed to a number of Roux-en-Y Gastric bypass including patient set up and considerations. This will be followed by presentations around the commissioning of a bariatric service and overview of the national bariatric surgery database. You will also attend an MDT meeting.

Module Two – 27th and 28th June 2012

Module 2 will be held at the ESI in Hamburg. This will involve using Simbionix computer simulators where you will carry out basic skills, suturing skills and a laparoscopic bypass. You will then take part in a dry lab where you will perform various Bariatric procedures. You will have the opportunity to test new pulsed perfusion models which has red liquid pulsed into splenic artery so harvested tissue can bleed. Day two will be in wet labs. You will complete a Band, Sleeve Gastrectomy and RNY Gastric Bypass

Module Three – 12th October 2012

Module three will involve hands on surgery of all techniques learnt to date on fresh frozen human cadavers. This part of the module will take place at the NSTC, Freeman Hospital.

Finally, delegates will be required to deliver a presentation around current Bariatric topics of interest/contention. Presentation slides need to be submitted to faculty prior to presentation.

Laparoscopic Colorectal Foundation Courses for Specialist Registrars Years 5 & 6 (ST 7 – 8) Summer and Autumn 2012

The STEPS Laparoscopic Colorectal Foundation Course, established by Ethicon Endo-Surgery in partnership with The ICENI Centre in Colchester, offers advanced training in laparoscopic colorectal surgery over six days, split between Colchesterand ESI, Hamburg. Since its inception, sixty delegates have completed the course.

Module One

The first two day Module held in Colchester concentrates on anatomical considerations for right hemicolectomy, a step-wise approach to performing this operation laparoscopically, laparoscopic suturing techniques and operating theatre set-up for safe practice. There is also a live surgery demonstration. Delegates will also carry out dissection on synthetic models and animal tissue in our skills laboratory and gain an understanding of procedural complications.

Module Two

The second two day Module in Hamburg consolidates the skills learnt in Module One and there will be an opportunity to perform wet lab surgery with close supervision, as well as to take advantage of further dry lab experience. There will be a progression to left sided resection using Simbionix simulators.

Module Three

The third two day Module, held at ICENI Colchester focuses on training on left sided resections, with a lidemonstration and presentations by delegates on allocated laparoscopic topics. A certificate of attendance is awarded for delegates completing all three modules.
