ASiT Concerns on RCSEd Trainee Rep
Dear ASiT members,
In 2010 the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh removed ASiT representation on their council and an independent trainee representative was elected instead.
ASiT publicly expressed grave concerns regarding the ability of a single unsupported individual to adequately represent trainees’ opinions.
These concerns have been realised by the representative’s recently expressed opinions in the latest RCSEd Surgeons News magazine regarding the EWTD:

This article expresses ill-informed views regarding the EWTD which are completely at odds with previous ASiT surveys, which revealed that over two-thirds of surgical trainees reported deterioration in their surgical training since EWTD, with only 1% of respondents experiencing any improvement:

Furthermore, ASiT has strong evidence from European surgical training associations that the EWTD is paid mere lip service with most countries routinely working in excess of 48 hours. This highlights his clear misunderstanding of the implementation of the EWTD across continental Europe.
A formal ASiT response and letter to the RCSEd President, Mr David Tolley, can be found below. The letter portrays the concern regarding trainee representation not being representative of the wider trainee view.
We urge all trainees to respond to this online article in the comments section below it, and share your concerns regarding RCSEd representation and the effects of EWTD on training. Many have already commented and it is important to make your views heard!
