WHO Surgical Safety Checklist

Project SAVED

Supporting Patient Safety First by using the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist
21-27 September 2009

The WHO Surgical Safety Checklist has been adopted by the NHS and will be part of all theatre lists by February 2010 as part of the WHO ‘Safe Surgery Saves Lives’ initiative.

ASiT are encouraging all surgical trainees to support Patient Safety First Week by practicing with the new WHO Surgical Safety Checklist.

All that is required is:
  • Undertake a briefing
  • Use the Checklist
  • Undertake a debriefing

This will be for ONE operating theatre list during National Patient Safety Week.

All trainees undertaking this and completing online feedback will receive a certificate for your portfolio.

All the necessary documents can be downloaded below.

Trialing the checklist now will help embed the Checklist into training at an early stage to strengthen a safety culture.

And for anyone who wants to see Benton saving Carter by sticking to the Surgical Safety Checklist on ER then follow this link…
