ASiT Response: Report of the JCST Phase 1 Review Group

The Joint Committee on Surgical Training (JCST) is an advisory body to the four surgical Royal Colleges of the UK and Ireland, the Specialist Surgical Associations in Great Britain and Ireland, for all matters in relation to surgical training.

As such it is in charge of the controversial ISCP website- the Intercollegiate Surgical Curriculum Programme.

The JCST recently published a Phase 1 review report which upon a background of changes proposed in the English White Paper "Equity and Excellence: Liberating the NHS" and the transition of the GMC into a training/revalidation body is of timely and significant importance for all surgical trainees.

We strongly support the report's recommendation that the ISCP and trainee fee be incorporated into annual Royal Surgical College subscriptions.

As it is a Phase 1 review we will defend surgical trainees from all nine surgical specialties amidst the political turmoil.
