Prize Winners

2011/2012

This year we received many strong applications for the ASiT/Elsevier Surgical Elective Prize.

Each applicant was marked indepently by 5 Judges, those with the highest scores were reviewed and we are delighted to announce the following winners:

Winner: Eleanor Zimmerman - 5th Year Peninsula (Vietnam) £500

Runner-up: Adam Ali - Final year Oxford (Tanzania)£250

Thank you for all the applications we received, many were outstanding and selection was very difficult.

2010/2011

Matthew Fell, Final Year Univeristy of Manchester, was awarded the first prize of £500

Mahiben Maruthappu, 5th Year Univeristy of Oxford, was awarded the runner up prize of £250.

 
2009/2010

Georgina Riddiough, Final year at Leicester University, 1st Prize £500

Nathan West, Fourth year at Swansea/Cardiff University, Joint 2nd prize £125

Will Muirhead, Final year at Nottingham University, Joint 2nd prize £125

 

About the Prize

 

How to apply

 

·         Complete the application form below, and submit it by midnight Sunday 11th December 2011 to LauraAndrews@asgbi.org.uk

 

·         The following supporting documentation must be received with your application:

o   A letter in support of your application from your Medical School.

o   A letter in support of your application from a designated supervisor at your host institution, confirming that your application statement is true and accurate.

Eligibility

 

·         Applicants must be:

o   Enrolled at a recognised UK Medical School.

o   Student members of ASiT.

o   Begin their elective after 31st August 2011 and before 1st January 2013 and not have already commenced the elective at the time of application.

 

·         The elective:

o   Must be focused on Surgery, including clinical practice and/or academic surgery.

o   May take place anywhere in the world, including the UK.

 

·         Applications must be received complete, including supporting information, by the deadline of midnight 11th December 2011.

 

·         The recipients of the Prize must be available to give 15 minute presentations of their experiences at the 2013 ASiT conference, and must submit a 1000 word report to be posted on the student pages of the ASiT website and included in the ASiT yearbook.

 

 

Selection process

 

Applications will be shortlisted by a select committee from the ASiT Council. Shortlisted applications will then be considered by the Executive, and the two winners chosen. Successful applicants will be notified by  January 31st  2012.
