The Mammary Fold

Breast Surgery has undergone enormous change in the last fifteen years. Many breast surgeons are now dedicated Oncoplastic breast surgeons who do not participate in the general surgical on call rota. Training in breast surgery is improving in quality. The introduction of the BASO/BAPS Oncoplastic fellowships has given breast trainees the chance to develop a wide range of Oncoplastic skills.

There are now more breast surgeons than there are urologists. Should breast surgery break away from general surgery? An Oncoplastic breast surgeon can be trained in a short time without general surgery and its compulsory shift rotas to distract. On the other hand, many of the skills learnt in general surgery are transferable

Trainees are divided on these issues but with the introduction of MMC, it is vital that trainees are represented by a trainee body with weight.

ASIT has the weight and I will work with the Mammary Fold to ensure that the interests of all breast trainees are represented.
