Date and Time: 06/03/2020
Venue: ICC Birmingham
Course Convenors: Miss Sophie Rintoul-Hoad and Miss Claire Jelley
Partner organisation: British Association of Urological Surgeons Section of Trainees (BSoT)
Target audience: FY2 - ST3
Overview: The BAUS Section of Trainees (BSoT) are pleased to run the third ‘Core Urology’ pre-conference course at ASiT 2020. It will cover practical, hands on training in a range of urology scenarios (both emergency and core skills). Delegates will rotate around stations that simulate: circumcision, stent and cystoscopy, scrotal exploration and complex catheterisation. These stations reflect common scenarios that on call surgical SHOs and urology registrars face. We hope that by the end of the day you feel more confident and prepared to manage urological emergencies safely and competently. There will also be opportunities for careers, interview and Specialty Training guidance. We look forward to meeting you!
Learning outcomes:
- Better understand the principles of managing common urological emergencies
- Surgical skills simulation training using mixed fidelity models; including suturing, cystoscopy and catheterisation
- Careers and guidance showcasing urology as (the best) surgical specialty
Programme
Groups will rotate through 4 stations which will be practical with time to contextualise that station. Faculty will be urologists from a range of training grades. The programme is still to be finalised but a provisional programme is seen below.
Station 1: Acute testicular pain: simulation of scrotal exploration (with bovine model)
Station 2: Phimosis and Paraphimosis: Circumcision simulation model
Station 3: Infected, obstructed kidney: Cystoscopy (rigid +/-flexi) and ureteric stent placement on simulation models
Station 4: Difficult catheterisation: including SPC with simulation model, 2 way, 3 way and curved catheters.
