Course Format:

This course will provide an introduction to cardiothoracic surgery and clinically relevant topics for junior surgical trainees. The primary aims of this course are two-fold. Firstly, to provide a level of knowledge which would allow juniors trainees to provide safe cross cover to cardiac and thoracic surgery inpatients. Secondly, the course aims to display some of the most interesting and pioneering aspects of cardiothoracic surgery to students and junior doctors who may be interested in pursuing a career within this speciality.

Course Programme (subject to change) will include:

• A day in the life of a cardiac surgeon
• A day in the life of a thoracic surgeon
• The cardiothoracic surgery career pathway, including advice from previous applicants
• The future of cardiac surgery
• Cardiac surgery session, including operative videos covering
• Valve pathology and replacement
• CABG pathology
• Thoracic surgery session, including a case round table with an emphasis on radiological imaging examples and pre-recorded content
• Practical session - CABG & coronary artery anastomosis 
• The opportunity for Q&A with both cardiac and thoracic trainees of all levels
