Virtual Consensus Hackathon

Virtual Consensus Hackathon

Identifying and developing technology-enhanced

projects to address surgical training gaps

The Health Education England Technology Enhanced Learning Team propose a Virtual Consensus Hackathon with surgical trainees (as well as other multi-professional learners). The purpose is to discuss and evaluate potential technological solutions in this field with the aim of identifying and agreeing several proposals for suitable solutions to carry forward. This will initially be piloted using surgical trainees. ASiT and BOTA will coordinate the event. The Hackathon process will be managed by the MedTech foundation on behalf of ASIT. Agreed outputs will be used to inform and expand the range and scope of technological offers that may be incorporated into educational interventions.

Participants will receive workshops and training on hackathons, clinical innovation and technology enhanced learning, and they will have dedicated time to work in their teams on their project ideas. You will be added to a dedicated event Slack Workspace to work with your team and network with mentors before, during and after the event. The day itself will be coordinated on Zoom.

The idea of the event is to generate consensus on the most important and urgent unmet needs to focus on. After this, you and your teams will receive mentoring to develop ideas and concepts that may form a project that could address these needs through technology and innovation. Your team will submit a Concept Note as a project proposal, and deliver a brief elevator pitch to a panel. These will be reviewed and the most feasible will be invited to the next stage, receiving funding and support to take forward their project.
