The ASiT International Surgical Conference 2018 will be held in the impressive City of Edinburgh. This is your chance to socialise with over 700 fellow trainees from all 10 surgical specialities, listen to latest updates in clinical practice, training and workforce issues, and hear what the future holds for us all in surgical training.

Abstracts summarising audits, original research, pilot-projects, case reports, systematic reviews or meta-analysis are invited from trainees in all ten surgical specialities and medical students. See below for individual abstract categories. We warmly welcome international trainee submissions from outside the UK and Ireland.

Abstracts undergo rigorous and anonymous peer-review by a minimum of three reviewers. The highest scoring abstracts are accepted for presentation (either oral or poster).

All accepted abstracts presented at the conference will be published in Elsevier’s International Journal of Surgery. Access to abstracts will be free for two months for those without an IJS subscription. Please note, it can take up to 8 months for abstracts to be published.

Full submission guidelines are available below. In particular, please note:

    •    Abstracts must be no more than 200 words in length.

    •    All accepted and presented abstracts will be published online in the IJS.

    •    Each individual may only submit a maximum of 2 abstracts for consideration, irrespective of their authorship position on these.

    •    The submitting author should be the author presenting at the conference.

    •    Abstracts should be formatted with an Aim, Method, Results and Conclusions (except case reports).

Reasons to Submit Your Abstract to the ASiT Conference

There has never been a better time to submit an abstract to the ASiT Conference. Here are some reasons why it will be great for your career:

1. Authors of the best abstracts will be invited to present in the prestigious conference oral sessions to some of the most influential members of the UK surgical community.

2. The highest ranking abstracts will be published in an indexed supplement in the International Journal of Surgery.

3. The SARS prize is a prestigious session reflecting high quality Clinical and Basic Science Research, and will be judged by members of the SARS council.

4. The ASiT Medal and Poster Prizes are highly prestigious and include a significant cash prize.

Rules of Submission

ASiT takes a serious view of Research Governance. The material contained within a submitted paper must not have been previously published or presented at any major meeting.

Previous presentation at hospital, medical school, local or regional meetings is acceptable provided the abstract has not previously been published following this.

Please ensure that the abstract has been seen and agreed by all of the named authors before submission. All authors have a responsibility to ensure that the data submitted is accurate, is not extrapolated and fairly represents the presentation to be given at the Association’s Annual Meeting.

General advice about authorship, conflicts of interest, redundant publication and patient confidentiality in medical publishing can be found on the British Medical Journal website at

Commercial support and industry involvement must be clearly stated.

1. Each individual may only submit a maximum of 2 abstracts for consideration, irrespective of their authorship position.

2. The abstract should be no longer than 200 words (not including title). It is your responsibility to ensure that you keep to the word limit.

3. Abstracts this year are to be submitted as text only. No graphics or tables are allowed.

4. Abstracts are welcome on any subject in the field of Surgery. The work should be original and not previously published in abstract or paper form prior to submission.

5. Please use a spell checker on your abstract before submitting it!

6. All areas of the form must be completed; failure to do so will result in the form being rejected and your browser returning an error.

7. It is your responsibility to ensure that the information you provide is correct and to check the content of your abstract  and especially contact information. We cannot be held responsible for your abstract not being graded as the content was missing or for failure to notify successful authors of abstract acceptance if you did not fill the form in correctly.

8. Once completed and submitted electronically you cannot submit the same abstract again – make sure the first one is correct! You can however edit the submission up to the closing time of submission.

9. Please ensure your e-mail address is correct as you will be notified by e-mail if your abstract has been accepted.

10. DO NOT submit the same abstract twice, it will be difficult to decide which one to delete – either edit your abstract or delete it all together.

11. Evidence of falsification of results, plagiarism and/or misrepresentation will be treated as professional misconduct and will be reported to your Deanery and/or GMC for further investigation.

12. Case reports must ONLY be submitted under the ‘case report’ abstract submission category. Case report submitted under other categories will not be considered.

Please also note:

The person registering and submitting your abstract online will receive all future correspondence regarding that abstract. It is therefore not advisable to submit abstracts on behalf of colleagues. The author that intends to present the abstract should complete the online submission.

Following the ASiT conference, abstracts will not be published in the International Journal of Surgery until the autumn at the earliest.

Abstracts may be submitted to both ASiT and ASGBI.

By submitting an abstract to ASiT you confirm the title, authorship, affiliation and abstract wording are correct and acceptable for publication. Changes cannot be made to abstract content prior to publication in the International Journal of Surgery

Please note that no further changes or edits can be made after abstract submission has closed. The submitting authors confirm that the abstract can be published as-is.
