ASiT Response to Oriel ST3 Applicant Decision Error

The Association of Surgeons in Training (ASiT) is an independent professional body and registered charity (No. 274841) which works to promote the highest standards in surgical training. ASiT’s council has representation from all ten surgical specialties, and across the UK and Ireland. ASiT is the only body in the UK to represent trainees interests at both Core and Higher Surgical Training levels.

ASiT is concerned to hear the recent news that all nationally recruited offers for ST3 medical posts have been rescinded on 4th May 2018, following an administrative error on the Oriel application system.(1) The Royal College of Physicians have issued an apology and stated plans to reissue all posts following rectifying of this error, however the impact on trainees affected by this mistake cannot be understated.

Trainees may have already made decisions affecting their personal lives, which may have included turning down other training opportunities, as a result of released recruitment decisions. This development will likely cause much distress. ASiT strongly hopes these trainees are supported throughout the re-issuing of posts.

ASiT urges AoMRC alongside HEE to review recruitment processes across all specialities to prevent similar errors from occurring again in future.

On behalf of ASiT Council,

Gemma Humm
