Dear Surgical Trainees
With the implementation of the new contract now underway, you are no doubt aware that exception reporting is not solely designed for breach of contracted working hours, but equally importantly, also for the educational content as compared to your educational agreement.
As supervisors of training, CoPSS members are conscious that reporting mechanisms may vary between Trusts. We would encourage you therefore, if your assigned educational supervisor is not a part of the reporting pathway, to agree with them that you will include them in any exception report when it relates to education and training. This will allow the Schools of Surgery and Health Education England (HEE) to collate this information and feed it into the Quality process when assessing the content of training posts.
The Joint Committee on Surgical Training (JCST) is also keen to encourage you to use the reporting system to report any concerns that you have about your training. It will work closely with Schools of Surgery and HEE to monitor reports and ensure that issues are addressed via appropriate local or national channels.
