ASiT Operation Hernia Shorland Hosking Fellowship 2020

Operation Hernia  is an independent not-for-profit organization that provides professional and educational opportunities to surgeons and surgical trainees in the repair of long-standing groin hernias at rural hospitals in the developing world. Operation Hernia was initiated in 2005 from Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, England, via that city’s official cultural link with Takoradi, Ghana.

It is an honour for ASiT be involved with the annual ASiT/Operation Hernia Shorland Hosking Fellowship named after the surgeon from Poole who died tragically in an air accident shortly after returning from an Operation Hernia mission to Nigeria.

Each year Operation Hernia and ASiT jointly award the Shorland Hosking Fellowship valued at up to £1000. The award allows a Specialist Surgical Registrar (Higher Surgical Trainee) to join an Operation Hernia mission and work with a group of Consultant Surgeons, usually for a period of one week. The aim is to provide valuable surgical experience of working in a low- or middle- income country and the purpose of the money awarded is to cover the registrar’s costs for air travel and local travel, accommodation and subsistence. The scheme has now run successfully for several years, the award winners having gained significant experience as a result.

Applicants are required to submit the application materials below detailing their interest in and any previous experience of surgery in low- and middle-income countries. Applications should be submitted by email to ASiT at (please CC
