ASiT Medical Student Elective Prize

2018 Applications are now open!

The deadline for applications is midnight 29st March 2018.

ASiT is proud to offer two elective prizes, totalling £750 to UK and Republic of Ireland medical students interested in pursuing a career in surgery.

Applicants should be undertaking an elective in any field of either clinical or academic surgery anywhere in the world.

The 1st prize recipient will receive £500 and will be asked to present their elective work orally at the annual ASiT international conference as well as write an elective report that will be published in the ASiT Yearbook. The runner-up will receive £250and will also be required to submit a report for the ASiT Yearbook.

How to apply

The following supporting documentation must be received with your application:

  • Completed application details form 
  • A letter in support of your application from your medical school.
  • A letter in support of your application from a designated supervisor at your host institution, confirming that your application statement is true and accurate.
  • A one-page summary CV.


Applicants must be:

  • Enrolled at a recognised Medical School in the UK or Republic of Ireland.
  • A student member of ASiT.
  • Undertaking their elective prospectively from March 2018.

The Elective

  • Must be focused on Surgery, including clinical practice and/or academic surgery.
  • May take place anywhere in the world, including the UK.

Applications must be received complete, including supporting information, by the deadline date. Unfortunately, we cannot accept any late applications.
The recipients of the prize must be available to give 15 minute presentations of their experiences at the 2019 ASiT conference, and must submit a 1000 word report (including images with permissions attached) to be posted on the student pages of the ASiT website and included in the 2019 ASiT yearbook.
Selection Process
Applications will be shortlisted by a selection committee from the ASiT Council. Shortlisted applications will then be considered by the Executive, and the winners chosen on merit. Successful applicants will be notified by email by the end of May 2018.
